Bring Your Own Coffee Cup
16.000.000.000 paper cups are used in America each year.
Used coffee cup consists of:
1 paper cup a day = 23 lbs of waste into a landfill a year.
Could fill 6.000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
Only 1.5% of drinks served at Starbucks are in reusables. If every customer used a reusable tumbler, we could save:
- 4.4 billion gallons of water.
- 1.8 million lbs trees.
- 2.5 billion lbs of CO2.
Materials used to produce all 16 billion cups:
- 1.6 million lbs of plastic.
- 4 billion gallons of water.
- 6.5 million trees.
- 253 million lbs of waste.
- 4 billion lbs of CO2.
That’s more carbon dioxide than would be emitted if the entire population of San Francisco got in their cars and drove to New York. And it’s enough water to supply all of Los Angeles for 8 days.
The plastic used in coffee cup lids is polystyrene or styrofoam. It is a carcinogen and a neurotoxin, especially when heated. It is NOT recyclable or biodegradable.
Ways to save
Buying coffee in Starbucks tumblers saves 10¢ for every cup = $36 a year. Tumblers are designed to be used at least 3.000 times = average 8 years = 189 lbs of waste saved.
