How Coffee Revolutionized the World
- 800 AD. Coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goat herder when he saw his goats eating berries.
He notices his herd being especially spirited and lively. Coffee beans are actually seed inside red cherries and are referred to as "beans" because of their appearance. Those goats were acting wack because without caffeine: neurons fire, producing adenosine, adenosine receptors build up, you (or goats) get tired. With caffeine: adenosine receptors are blocked, dopamine levels are increased, pituitary gland freaks out, you get adrenaline (a coffee buzz).
~ 850 AD. Coffee was originally a food, not a drink. East African tribes mixed coffee with animal fat - the first power bar. The right way to drink coffee is in frequent small doses - about half a shot per hour has better brain gain than downing a 20 oz. drip.
- 1000. The people of the Arabian Peninsula were the first to brew coffee. Because Muslims were forbidden alcohol, they drank coffee instead. Little did they know they were being more productive too. 46% of us are less productive without it.
- 1600's. "The bitter invention of Satan" - initially skeptical Europeans' name for coffee. Coffee isn't from Hell, it's from the "Bean Belt". At the time, water was unsanitary, so Europeans mostly drank beer and gin. With the introduction of coffee, people switched from a depressant to a stimulant. Not so coincidentally, this was also the start of the Age of Enlightenment.
- 1668. The first coffee shops in Paris opened, instantly attracting revolutionaries with plans to topple the French monarchy.
- 1688. Coffee houses began surfacing in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore, once again serving revolutionaries...
- 1773. It became unpatriotic to drink tea in America due to the Boston Tea Party. Good thing too: coffee kept Paul Revere more awake than tea could have.
Caffeine per cup (milligrams of caffeine): filter - 140 mg., espresso - 40 mg., brewed - 150 mg., instant - 110 mg., white - 30 mg., black - 60 mg., green - 30 mg.
- 1865. James mason created the first iteration of the modern coffee maker. Unwittingly helping us all lead healthier lives. Drinking coffee can lower the chances of: stroke by 20%, heart disease by 25%, liver cirrhosis by 80%, type 2 diabetes by 60%,, depression by 20%, developing gout by 40%.
- Later that century... Italians had the crazy idea of adding milk to coffee, creating the latte. Barista: Italian for bartender. Latte (milk foam, steamed milk, espresso), Mocha (whipped cream, steamed milk, chocolate syrup, espresso), Americano (water, espresso).
- 1914. During World War I dehydrated packets of coffee were standard in military rations. for good reason: coffee allows us to run longer and faster by up to 25% - also increases concentration and decreases fatigue.
- 1920. The number of coffee houses in the U.S. skyrocketed by 450% due to Prohibition.
- 1971. Starbucks. Starbucks began it's plans for world domination and became one of the first specialty coffee houses selling freshly roasted beans and brewing equipment. Originally purchased for $3.8 million, Starbucks now pulls in $10.71 billion in revenue yearly (17000 stores, 50.000.000 customers a week, 170.000 drink combinations).
- 2012. Today, coffee is the 2nd most traded commodity in the world. Coffee was an essential part of our history and is now an essential part of everyday life. It's become the fuel for the modern world.
